Partners in the Outdoors Awards Grant to Two Front Range State Parks

Friends of Roxborough State Park and Friends of Castlewood Canyon State Park announce the award of a grant from Partners in the Outdoors for expansion of the Leave No Trace program. The $5,000 grant will help to advance the partnership effort between Friends of Roxborough State Park, Friends of Castlewood Canyon State Park, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics to expand Leave No Trace programming, education, and messaging throughout Colorado State Parks, Recreation Areas, and Wildlife Areas.

By providing the Partners in the Outdoors funding, CPW is cultivating partnerships that:

▫ Advance and balance outdoor recreation and conservation in Colorado

▫ Promote Colorado’s Outdoor Principles

▫ Support the priority areas identified in the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP).

Initially, the partnership of the Friends organizations, CPW and Leave No Trace will be focused on increasing the public’s awareness of visitor impacts at Roxborough and Castlewood Canyon State parks, and teaching critical Leave No Trace skills to mitigate these impacts. A key component of the partnership is for Castlewood Canyon State Park to achieve the Leave No Trace  Center’s Gold Standard Site designation — a status that Roxborough attained in 2018 — by the fourth quarter of 2019. Castlewood is applying Roxborough’s “toolkit” to complete their Gold Standard efforts. Continuing the partnership, Roxborough and Castlewood will use funding to team with other Colorado Parks and Wildlife facilities towards implementing Leave No Trace programming.

This longer-term objective will create a partnership model employing both virtual and physical toolkits that other Colorado Parks and Wildlife sites — including state parks, wildlife areas, and recreation areas — can deploy to develop and implement Leave No Trace programs. By disseminating the tool kits’ shared knowledge of visitor outreach and educational efforts, and through promoting low-impact use of public land across the state, the Roxborough/Castlewood Canyon park partnership aims to expand statewide adoption of the Leave No Trace principles.

“The mission of the Friends of Roxborough State Park is to support nature education and the stewardship of Roxborough State Park, and to help protect its boundaries and to preserve its natural, historical and cultural resources.”

“Friends of Castlewood Canyon State Park is a non-profit corporation that provides support for the interpretative and educational activities of Castlewood Canyon State Park.”
